DURBAN
Durban is a sophisticated cosmopolitan city of over 4 million people in the province of KwaZulu- Natal situated on the east coast of South Africa. It is the third largest city in South Africa and is the home of Africa’s best-managed, busiest port and is also a major centre of tourism because of the city’s warm subtropical climate and extensive beaches. The eThekwini Municipality which is one of the eight metropolitan municipalities in South Africa governs an area of 2,297km2 that includes urban and rural landscapes resulting in complex socio economic, environmental and governance challenges. The predominantly spoken languages in the province are isiZulu and English. eThekwini is a strategic space within the national economy with potential for growth in key economic sectors.
As with many South African cities, eThekwini Municipality faces the triple challenges of poverty, inequality and unemployment. Through various strategic planning processes coupled with implementation mechanisms, the Municipality is addressing these challenges within the overall framework of the National Development Plan and achieving the outcome of eliminating poverty and reducing inequality by 2030.
Durban is home to the iconic Moses Mabhida Stadium which is designed as a sustainable recreational and multi-disciplinary sporting venue that represents the success of the city and the
country in being the first African Country to host the FIFA Soccer World Cup in 2010. The stadium is highly recognised for its implementation of climate friendly technologies and initiatives, such as recycling of waste, energy efficient and photovoltaic panels. The city falls within one of the global biodiversity hotspots. Durban being a centre of diversity captures the cultural and economic spirit of KwaZulu-Natal with vibrant markets and public spaces.
