Working as a photographer at the Durban University of Technology’s (DUT’s) Communications Department has not only assisted me in gaining experience but has also helped me discover new things about myself and my capabilities.
Working in a team with people who have different qualifications from mine was challenging at first, but I was able to adapt. When I was a student, I only regarded DUT as a learning institution but since joining as an intern, I see it more as a global brand.
I not only take photographs, but also create content for DUT’s social media platforms. In doing so, I engage with people within the DUT community to produce content that highlights the many study opportunities offered at the institution. My biggest highlight thus far is the production of a weekly newsletter featuring DUT athletes that was my brainchild and which has been a great success. I am grateful for the support of my colleagues in this endeavour as well as staff in the DUT Sport Administration Unit and our athletes. This has boosted my confidence. I am no longer afraid of sharing new ideas and taking others’ views and advice into consideration.
