Fostering International Collaboration
in Chemical Engineering
Vukani Langa
Acting HOD of DUT’s Department of Chemical Engineering Dr Peterson Thokozani Ngema recently hosted a Research Seminar at the Center for Energy Resources Engineering (CERE), Technical University of Denmark (DTU).
The centre explores measurements of thermodynamic properties and activity coefficients at infinite dilution of selected organic solutes and water in a deep eutectic solvent.
Ngema’s seminar aimed to engage with the DTU to collaborate in the field of thermodynamics, COIL projects, student exchange, and the development of new industrial technologies.
He believes that his research will result in innovative technologies to solve CO2 capture, produce and store green hydrogen using gas hydrate technology, use green solvents for separation processes, develop electrolytes models for higher concentrations, and produce high-quality thermodynamic data to optimise industrial unit operations, which involve a distillation column, extraction column, crystallisation, and reaction unit.
Noting that collaboration with international universities is one of the pillars of ENVISION2030, he said: “The successful engagement with DTU will expand recognition of Chemical
Engineering research at DUT, which will attract international and national postgrad students as well as industrial partners.”
Ngema added that, after engaging online with colleagues at DTU, he was excited to be invited to visit the institution to see their chemical thermodynamics laboratories, engage with postgraduate students and be part of the CERE
team.
He extended his gratitude to Acting Executive Dean of DUT’s Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment, Professor S. Rathilal and Chemical Engineering staff for supporting the trip. “I am grateful to my department for their enormous support; without them, this would have never been possible.” He is confident that the collaboration will lead to innovative solutions, especially in the field
of Chemical Thermodynamics to produce quality, impactful research that can transform society and create entrepreneurship opportunities.

DUT SHOWCASES WHATS ON OFFER AT DUT'S
OPEN WEEK
Patience Makhaye
The Durban University of Technology (DUT) highlighted the prestigious 2024 Open Week at the Fred Crookes Sports Centre, Steve Biko Campus recently.
This event, aimed to provide an array of schools from Grade 9 and 12 learners with valuable insights into the university’s faculties, departments, and programmes.
The departments at DUT showcased their offerings, engaging with both learners and educators to answer questions and provide detailed information.
Mr Alex Mdletshe, DUT’s Student Recruitment Manager, highlighted the annual nature of the event and its importance in promoting DUT as an institution of choice among future students. He emphasised the strategic timing of the Open Week, particularly for Grade 12 learners preparing for their CAO applications and Grade 9 learners selecting subjects aligned with their career aspirations.
This event serves as a pivotal moment for prospective students to explore their academic and career options within DUT’s diverse academic landscape.
