Specific data regarding the rating category, race and gender of the researchers is outlined. Figure 22 reflects the number of researchers for each of the rating categories in 2024. The number of rated researchers increased from 41 in 2020 to 43 in 2021, 50 in 2022, 55 in 2023, and 61 in 2024, reflecting an increasing trend over the past 5 years. While in 2023 almost 71% of the rated researchers were category ‘C’, the number dropped to 67% in 2024. In contrast, ‘Y’ ratings increased from 18% in 2023 to 24% in 2024, indicating that more of the younger researchers had entered the rating space in year 2024. In 2024 the majority of ratings (39%) were hosted by the Faculty of Applied Sciences, as also reflected in previous years.

The race composition of the 2024 rated researchers indicates that Indian category increased from 24 to 27 while the African category increased from 18 to 21. However, the other two categories (White and Coloured) remained the same at 12 and 1, respectively. In 2024 the Indian race category remained the highest at 44% of all rated researchers, as it was in 2023 (Figure 23). The data was desegregated further to show the variation for faculty racial composition from 2020 to 2024 (Table 8).
