HSSE
The Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) department has 16 members and is led by John van Belkum.
 Safety
Safety has always been a priority at SAPREF but especially so since the 1990s. One of SAPREF’s key objectives is to provide a safe workplace, and to this end recent years have seen a sharp focus on safety awareness training, incident reporting and follow-up, reducing injuries, implementing Behavioural Based Safety programmes, and implementing a rigorous contractor management process.
SAPREF has initiated many projects
and programmes since 2000 to improve its environmental performance. Said John van Belkum, “Several of these stand out for me, for example the move away from heavy fuel oil to the much cleaner gas to fire our furnaces and boilers, and the SRU4/SCOT plant which was completed in 2002 and which reduced our sulphur dioxide emissions dramatically.
“In essence, though, the HSSE department is about caring for people, the environment and the business, and by doing this properly we also give realisation and meaning to our goals of no accidents, ensuring no person is harmed and the environment and assets are protected.”
Health
SAPREF boasts a fully equipped clinic with a full-time nurse and part-time doctor for first- line medical response to any injuries, as well as the provision of on-site occupational and primary health services. The occupational hygienist oversees all health services, including medical surveillance. As part of the health portfolio, SAPREF has an Employee Assistance Programme in place.
With HIV prevalent in KwaZulu-Natal, SAPREF has put measures in place to assist staff. These include comprehensive HIV management measures for staff. The measures have been extended to contractor staff via the CARE programme (Contractor Aids Relief) through which SAPREF sponsors on-site Voluntary Confidential Counselling and Testing (VCCT) and treatment off-site.
Security
SAPREF is a National Key Point and security measures are aligned to the requirements
of the NKP Act and regulations. The Security section not only controls access for the purposes of security, but also plays an important role in assuring safety through rigorous alcohol testing and dangerous goods checks at our access points.
Environment
SAPREF achieved the coveted ISO 14001 environmental management award 13 years ago. By adopting its requirements, and having been tested through an independent certification audit, SAPREF is able to prove conformance to internationally accepted environmental practices.
