 In pursuit of Goal Zero
Safety is the Number 1 priority at SAPREF. The focus on safety is meant to ensure that everyone goes home safely.
The traditional measure of safety at SAPREF was always the number of Lost Time Injuries (LTIs), and indeed over the years SAPREF achieved some extraordinary results. For example, on 25 October 1996, for the first time ever, and again on 9 September 2005, five million hours without an LTI were achieved. As if this was not good enough, on 15 March 1998 SAPREF achieved a staggering 9,42million hours without a Lost Time Injury.
Today, however, safety performance at SAPREF is measured more stringently — by the number of Total Recordable Cases (TRCs), which include Medical Treatment, Restricted
Workday and Lost Time injuries. Even with
the more stringent measurement, SAPREF continues to excel in safety management. In June 2013, for example, SAPREF achieved four million hours without a TRC. This achievement is all the more impressive given that this was achieved during a Turnaround, a time when there are thousands more people to manage, many of whom have not set foot on the SAPREF site before.
Says David Radebe, Safety Manager: “We have come a long way. Four million hours is an excellent achievement by any standard, but there are still challenges. They are mainly to do with compliance; people on site sometimes
Mr Andy Warner (Managing Director, 1983-1988), second left, congratulates SAPREF on achieving 1 000 000 man-hours without a disabling injury in January 1986.
