FOR Alumni and Friends OF THE DURBAN UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY
Yvette Govender
I enrolled at Natal Technikon in 2000 to pursue my National Diploma in Marketing, graduating in 2003. During my time there, the institution transitioned to Durban Institute of Technology and eventually to Durban University of Technology. The marketing department was housed at Mansfield Hall, with most lectures held in the main auditorium. These years remain some of my fondest memories. I had the privilege of meeting students from across KZN, each bringing unique perspectives and experiences yet united in our shared passion for marketing.
The marketing lecturers were extraordinary—passionate about their subjects and unwavering in their pursuit of excellence. As a school leaver, I had been warned that university lecturers might not care much about attendance or discipline. This couldn’t have been further from the truth in the marketing department. Our lecturers knew each student by name, tracked our attendance, and held us accountable for our performance.Their dedication and high expectations not only challenged us but also nurtured our growth.Their passion and commitment were instrumental in shaping my career and my love for marketing.
On a lighter note, the cafeteria was my favourite spot between lectures. It was there that I discovered a love for pool and even became pretty skilled at it! The vibrant student life, the Sports Centre, and the moments of relaxation created a perfect balance to the academic rigor. Those were truly some of the best days of my life— memories I will cherish forever.
Thank you,NatalTechnikon and DUT,for being such a special and transformative part of my journey.
I currently hold a National Diploma (2003), BTECH Degree (2011) and most recently, PG DIP: Marketing (2024).

I still remember the day I graduated on May 27, 2024, with a diploma in Management Sciences specialising in Public Relations and Communications. It was a moment of pure elation, marking the end of a challenging yet exhilarating three-year journey.
My university adventure began in 2021, amidst the uncertainty of online learning. I was a wide-eyed freshman, navigating the uncharted territory of varsity life. Little did I know, I was in for a wild ride! In my first year, I was elected as a class rep, but the irony was that I didn’t know any of my classmates! Luckily, I found a friend who shared my course, and we formed a study group that became my lifeline.
The second year was a game-changer. I started attending contact classes and, let me tell you, it was a baptism by fire! I recall walking into the wrong classroom, realising my mistake mid-lecture, and sneaking out—Talk about embarrassing!
However, that year also brought some amazing experiences. I attended a student entrepreneurship boot camp and won third place in a pitching competition. The thrill of victory was addictive! In my third year, I took on the role of House Com Secretary for my residence. It was a challenging yet rewarding experience, as I became a mentor and a leader to my peers. I often joke that I felt like a mother to my fellow students!
Today, I’m pursuing my Advanced Diploma in Public Relations and Communications, a stepping stone to my future goals. After completing this qualification, I’m set to embark on my Postgraduate Diploma studies in 2025.The journey ahead is exciting and daunting, but I’m ready to take on new challenges.
My university journey has been a rollercoaster ride of laughter, tears, and triumphs. It’s taught me to be resilient, adaptable, and fearless. As I continue on this journey, I know that the best is yet to come!
