Silverglen Nature Reserve
The use of muthi (Zulu traditional medicine) is deeply rooted in Zulu culture. A vast number of plant species are used to make muthi preparations, and as a result of over- exploitation and shrinking habitats, some muthl plants have been driven to the brink of extinction.
To help save these plants growing in the wild, the Silverglen Nature Reserve has established a nursery which propagates muthi plants using indigenous knowledge. The nursery cultivates about 120 at-risk plant species and plays a vital role in conserving Durban’s natural flora.
