It is supposed to be the best summer ever. Tara, Skye, and Em touch down at the Greek party resort of Malia for the vacation to end all vacations. Tara, the last remaining virgin, is on a mission to change that and her best friends are causing chaos right alongside her. The 16-year-old drinks and dances her way through the messy bars and grimy nightclubs, until she meets a couple of boys. This vibrant, compassionate look at sex, friendship, consent, and the sweet smell of a boozy sunburned summer holiday paints an exhilarating, moving, and painfully familiar portrait of young adulthood.
Based on Adaobi Tricia Nwaubani’s 2009 novel, this dramatic comedy tells the story of Kingsley, the first-born of his family, burdened with all the benefits and responsibilities that entail including the need to graduate and find a job so that he can take care of his family. The threat of poverty can send even the most reverent of men down a gloomy path and unable to find work, he is seduced by the life his uncle, Boniface, aka “Cash Daddy,” leads, and the things it affords him. Together, they provide the ultimate foils for each other, as the morality tale unfolds.
Rio de Janeiro, 1997. Malu, a 50-year-old, unemployed, and bipolar actress, lives in a precarious house in a favela close to the sea. Dreaming of her glorious past in the theatre, she finds herself obliged to house her mother, Lili. The arrival of Joana, Malu’s daughter interrupts their violent fights. The brief period of harmony ends and Malu evicts her mother. A few years later, lonely and abandoned, Malu develops severe neurological conditions, and Joana finally returns to care for her. With the imminence of death, they return to São Paulo and an unexpected lightness enters their mother-daughter relationship.
