Following an argument with his mother, Ocho leaves home in search of his absent father despite his mother’s warning. He is desperate to connect with him and tries to find common ground and understand their estrangement. Initially enchanted by his father’s recall of his sporting exploits they begin to share a drink, or two.... or more. As the night closes in Ocho opens to his father and shares his dreams and aspiration. The reason for his mother’s caution soon becomes clear and the night ends with the ugly truth revealed and dreams and hopes shattered.
An Ivorian American woman’s day begins ordinarily enough, she visits a hair salon in Abidjan to have her hair braided. The conviviality and camaraderie of the hair salon are warm and inviting. With her hair only partially braided, her hair stylist disappears without a trace. The intrepid young woman sets out on a quest to find her. Her adventure takes her through a magical rendition of the metropolis to find her stylist. She traverses an animated Côte d’Ivoire and braves several dangerous encounters to track her down. When her hair is finally braided, she wonders where exactly she has been.
In a rural area of Balochistan, on the border of Iran and Pakistan, women are only allowed to sing in private rituals. Fariba, a teenage girl from the region, comes from a family immensely talented in music and singing. Her brother is a revered and much-loved celebrity performer, often appearing on television and live in concert. She desperately wants to be able to do the same. She will have to challenge decades of discrimination to be able to do that. Are the obstacles she faces too big for her dreams or will her tenacity of spirt and desire to perform overcome theses these challenges?
