South African Cinema Data Analysis
for 2020
The national lockdown commenced on 26 March 2020 due to an increase in infections of the coronavirus pandemic. Cinema chains like Ster-Kinekor, Nu Metro, Cine Centre as well as other independents cinemas closed. This has had a significant impact on the performance of theatrical films as their lifespan on the circuit was cut short.
The data is sourced from IMDB.COM and the Box Office Mojo website. One of the limitations is that films cannot be tracked further once they are out of the top 100. Also, all the
figures quoted in this report are for the period while the film is still competing in the top 100. This therefore might not reflect the exact revenue the film has accrued once it falls from the top 100 brackets.
