The new National Senior Certificate (NSC)was introduced in 2008 to replace the ‘old’ Senior Certificate (SC). This change presented new challenges for the 2009 entry cycle. Prerequisites for the new National Senior Certificate (NSC) had to be developed for inclusion into the IT software and Handbook.
Most of the member institutions were
as unprepared for this as the CAO was. Despite numerous changes requested by institutions, Handbooks were mailed to schools before the end of February 2008.
In addition, the development of the new IT system required a radical shift in paradigm that required a complete rethink of every aspect of the CAO’s business process. In addition
to the software development, the desktop environment was expanded, with new systems utilising dual flat-screen technology and the latest office productivity suites. Servers and their system software were brought up to date with the then latest IBM hardware and Microsoft software.
A move towards a paperless workflow system was introduced where applications and their related documents were scanned using high volume A3 format duplex scanners. These scanners utilised barcode recognition technology that worked in conjunction with the CAO’s software application to index and store the images electronically.
