  TIMELINE FOR THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE CAO
The CAO was one of the original projects considered by the Eastern Seaboard Association of Tertiary Institutions (esATI). First discussed in 1993, the project was approved through successive stages by unanimous votes of the Governing Board. Critical Board decisions were:

Board of the Regional Institutional Cooperation Project (RICP) takes an in principle decision to pursue the establishment of a regional admissions office for KwaZulu-Natal
First of two workshops is held to discuss the feasibility of a central applications office for KZN
The second workshop is held to discuss the feasibility of a central applications office for KZN
Board received preliminary feasibility report from Deloitte and Touche and approved the project in principle
Board resolved unanimously to
revise the business plan, begin implementation of the project and request the working committee to identify funding sources, which would avoid member institutions having to pay for the project
Board unanimously agreed to proceed with the establishment of

the CAO and also agreed to the appointment of a temporary manager pending the advertising of the post of Executive Officer of the CAO. The Board also approved the proposal that the project be funded with a loan of R5m from the First National Bank and approved that member institutions would provide the necessary surety for the loan
The Board agreed to advertise the position of Chief Executive Officer for the CAO, which was to be approved by the Vice-Chancellors of the member institutions
Board approved the proposed process for purchasing software; and approved the composition of the selection committee for the post of Executive Officer of the CAO
Board agreed in principle that the CAO could become a national project. Agreed to the timing of staff appointments in the CAO. Agreed to the sequencing of CAO goals

CAO starts operating as an applications processing entity within esATI

Board approves the delegation of authority to the Steering Committee to finalise the wording of the Memorandum of Agreement
First applicant cohort applying through the CAO starts second semester studies
First semester cohort applying through the CAO commence their studies
