The model distinguishes between foundational literacies, competencies, and character qualities. Some of the foundational literacies, such as literacy and numeracy, will be developed through education but many of the competencies and character qualities are acquired and learned through having to deal with complex challenges or through trial and error as we navigate a changing world.
Of course, not all literacies will be required in all roles, for example, scientific and ICT literacy may be specific to certain roles. However, a study that analysed two million online job postings revealed that the top five skills that employers were consistently looking for were communication, creativity, collaboration, creative problem-solving and critical thinking1.The South African Graduate Employer’s Association’s (SAGEA) 2023 Development Benchmarking Study among top graduate employers revealed that the top three skills being developed among the young talent they employ are critical thinking, communication and collaboration. Evidently, these are critical skills!
Space does not allow for a detailed description of the skills listed but, should you wish to explore these, please read more about this from the World Economic Forum: link.
There is an additional skill that does not appear on the list – the possession of which is going to become the next superpower – artificial intelligence (AI) skills. The ability to understand and effectively deploy AI as a productivity multiplier in the workplace will, increasingly, be a sought-after skill and competence.

Getting involved in volunteer groups, community initiatives, interest groups or recreational activities will provide you with platforms to grow your soft skills.
• Continuous Learning: Develop a habit of lifelong learning. Stay curious and proactive about acquiring new knowledge and skills. This could be through formal education, online courses, workshops, or self-study.
• Adaptability and Resilience: Be prepared to adapt to changes and bounce back from setbacks. The ability to navigate uncertainty and learn from mistakes and failures is essential.
• Global Awareness: In a connected world, understanding global perspectives, cultural differences, and international trends can provide a competitive edge. Identify reliable sources of news and information on media that appeal to you and follow these to stay informed. Be intentional about who or what you follow on social media and platforms such as LinkedIn–curate a following that develops your knowledge and skills.
• Entrepreneurial Mindset: Even within traditional employment, having an entrepreneurial mindset—being innovative, proactive, and solution-oriented—can lead to new opportunities and growth. Numerous examples of
business start-ups have been born out of a simple problem that needs solving! Be on the lookout for problems that need to be solved and opportunities to disrupt traditional ways of doing things!
• Ethical and Social Awareness: Develop an understanding of ethical issues related to technology, sustainability, and social responsibility. Be conscious of considering the ethical and environmental impacts of each decision you make.
• Network and Build Relationships: Establishing a strong network can provide support, mentorship, and opportunities for collaboration and career advancement. Some people are more natural at networking than others. If this is not your strong suit, you may need to work harder at it. Reach out to family and friends who can help you to build your network. When you meet someone you’d like to have in your network, be intentional about establishing contact with them.
Remaining competitive in a dynamic job market and future- proofing your skills will be important no matter where you are on your career journey. Knowing which skills are valued and how to grow your own skill base will help you to navigate your career.
