Nonhlanhla Mkhize
Nonhlanhla is a CoFounder and Executive Director of
the Lesbian & Gay Community & Health Centre, a project of the KZN Coalition for Gay & Lesbian Equality. Founded 9 August 2000, the Centre is a drop- in and service providing non- profit which runs an Outreach Mosaic Clinic, conducts diversity training, human rights education and advocacy. A human rights defender, Nonhlanhla has studied, volunteered and worked with a variety of organisation e.g. Legal Resources Centre, Provincial Parliamentary Programme, S.A. Youth Council (KZN), KZN Network on Violence
Against Women, Children’s Right Centre, Commission on Gender Equality, South African Human Rights Commission, Treatment Action Campaign, Gender AIDS Forum, Section 27 and SWEAT - all which have (and continue to) equipped them to run such a holistic drop-in centre and safe space, and to engage with, provide guidance to and leadership among Civil Society, Public Service and Business Sectors. For their Masters in Social Sciences (Anthropology) Nonhlanhla, researched Durban Women’s Perceptions of the Female Condom (fc1 vs fc2). Nonhlanhla is a member of Amnesty International South Africa Durban Group, and a trustee to various Women, Youth and Children CSOs. Nonhlanhla has and continues to support/advise various grassroots movements e.g. Democracy From Below, Abahlali BaseMjondolo, Landless People’s Movement. Nonhlanhla (CEO, Solid Foundation For Youth) invests in policy research and practice aimed at advancing the rights and wellbeing of adolescents and young people, early childhood, skill and talent development.
Nonhlanhla is a process facilitator and human rights trainer with NJM Enablers specialising in Diversity, Sexual Offenses, Domestic Violence, and Human Trafficking; is Chairperson to the S.A. National AIDS Council’s Civil Society Forum’s LGBTI Sector, and Co-Chairs a variety of multi- stakeholder structures i.e. S.A’s Global Fund Human Rights and Gender Technical Task Team and KZN Task Team on Hate Crimes.
