Isandlwana – the original name of this mountain is “Bayavungana”. It is so thought-provoking that there was later a mumbling (ukuvungama) between the Zulus and English which resulted in the famous 1879 Isandlwana War that saw a historic heavy defeat of the British Army at the hands of the spear carrying mighty Zulu army under the supreme commander of King Cetshwayo. Isandlwana’s name came into being because the locals as they woke in the early morning that saw white
tents standing resembling small huts (izindlwana) hence the name Isandlwana (kusandlwana).
Prevalent in Section D:
Famous landmarks include Dr JL Dube High School (named after the founder of uHlanga School, Ilanga Newspaper, and first ANC President in 1912 of the Qadi clan), Nhlakanipho High School, Africa Supermarket, Kwa-Nkomo shop, Kwa- Mnguni Supermarket (where the famous local eatery Rooftop is today located), Church of Gospel (where the leader of Grammy Award-winning group Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Prof Joseph Shabalala, used to minister). Some famous people include Mama Duma (a famous teacher in the
area), Judge Pius Langa, producer-director-writer and founder of K-CAP, Ekhaya Multi Arts Centre, Mr Edmund Mhlongo (resided in D1244 Mkhambathi Road), famous TV actor Melusi Yeni, and the famous NPSL Referee Mr “Star” Shoba also of Mkhambathi Road. One of the first councilors during the dawn of democracy (1994) in SA was Mrs. Gladys Mazibuko, as well as Mr. Dumisani Ngema. Ms. Vicky Masuku, a former uKhozi FM anchor presenter (in-studio) and who later progressed as the first female commentator in sports (soccer, rugby, cricket) presenter, is also from this section, so is Pastor Mthunzi Namba, Mr Mandla Masuku (STAX), businessman Mzi Khumalo and the famous Bassist Sipho Gumede among others.
