Below are just a few examples of real-life crime or security related issues. We hope that
by sharing some of these examples, we can be more prepared and resilient as employees, individuals and as an organization. Whether you’re working remotely or in-person at the BWL, this information can help you be more secure!
Breaking and Entering:
Unknown criminals broke into a BWL building a few weeks ago and ended up stealing scrap metal. Thanks to an attentive employee who noticed the incident, the building was secured, and the incident reported to LPD. We’ve also upgraded the physical security of the building.
• Takeaway: We want to thank Bob Kingsbury, primary meter specialist, for being observant and calling Security when needed. Scrap metals are valuable
to a lot of people, and they will go to extreme measures to steal them. Things like
old lawnmowers or bikes
are always targets to these criminals, so please take care of your property before it’s too late.
Suspicious People: Fleet Services employees noticed a suspicious vehicle trespassing in our yard area. They notified Security, and we responded by calling LPD. They had arrest

warrants that LPD handled, and were removed from our property.
• Takeaway: This is another
example of employees taking ownership of their surroundings and following the “See Something Say Something” culture. Thanks to Brian Wisdom, equipment mechanic leader, and his Fleet Services team for calling us on this one! We are here to assist in situations like this and can coordinate these types of things with LPD if needed. If situations ever
get confrontational, then
we would encourage you to take a step back and remove yourself from the area. Your safety is important, and we are here to help!
Trespassing: We had a situation where a criminal entered a parking lot and stole a BWL work jacket. Observant employees worked together and notified Security and LPD. We were able to work together to identify the person, which led to getting the stolen jacket back.
• Takeaway: Continuing with
the theme from above: If You See Something Say Something. Observant employees led to the discovery of this situation, and the closure of the case. Also, this one is a good reminder to lock your vehicles all of the time.
These are just some examples
of things that BWL Security deals with on a routine basis. We’re thankful we have a great relationship with our law enforcement partners and are especially thankful for employees being observant and calling us as needed.
Reminders:
LocalCrimemap: Asa reminder, there is a public
map that can be found at this link on the LPD website, www. Lansingmi.gov/569/Crime- Mapping. It shows regional crime data and contains information on things of the more serious nature, like assault, motor vehicle theft, and burglary. It does not contain ALL crime, but is a good visual example of our local situation.
As we’re returning to work, please remember to keep focused on good security measures at home:
• Lock your cars, homes, windows, etc.
• Have a trusted neighbor or friend help monitor your property and invest in a home security camera if desired.
And remember, we’re here to help you keep yourselves and our properties secure. We’re always available as a resource for anything related to security.
