About
the ANNE L BOEDECKER
Artist &
the I have been guided this semester by the depth and wisdom of
Mary Oliver’s poems. What I love most about her work is her
Work attunement to the natural world and its inhabitants. The smallest
details of an owl’s descent, or a grasshopper eating out of her
hand, evoke Aristotle’s phrase that “in all things of nature there is
something of the marvelous”. I have explored nature’s marvelous
indigenous art through fabric dyeing with naturally-derived plant
dyes and botanical printing on fabric and paper.
These four pieces began organically (literally) in my summer
garden. Coreopsis and hydrangeas, heuchera and black-eyed
susans, give up their color and form when steamed with fabric or
paper. Autumn leaves hold their shape when pressed. Lichen and
tree bark add textural elements as well as intricate patterns.
