February is Heart Health Month!
The purpose of American Heart Month is to raise awareness on the importance of a healthy heart and
to encourage healthy habits that reduce the risk of heart disease (AHA). Statistically, African Ameri-
cans are at higher risk of heart than other ethnicities. Hypertension (high blood pressure or HBP) is a
heart disease, and it is known as the “silent killer.” Here are a few facts heart health facts about blood
pressure:
African Americans in the U.S have a higher incidence of hypertension (HBP) than any other racial
and ethnic group.
More than 1/3 American adults have HBP don’t even know they have it.
Hypertension (HBP) is a leading risk factor for heart disease and stroke.
Statistics report that 49% of African American women ages 20 and older have heart disease and
kills 50,000 women annually.
At age 50, people without HBP have a life expectancy 5 years longer than people with HBP.
Here are four strategies for managing hypertension:
1. Know your numbers. Monitor your blood pressure at home.
2. If you have hypertension (HBP) take your medication as prescribed at the same time every
day.
4. Eat a healthy and nutritious diet that includes fruits, vegetables
5. Increase your physical activity and avoid a sedentary lifestyle.
