Great Expectations
n September 8, 1993, a new year began. However, there was
much more to it than that. People’s lifestyles were about to shift
and change into a new mold, one that was very different and
Omore complex than the last. Everyone expected the change. Some
were willing to welcome it, while others turned their backs and simply glanced
over their shoulder. New students had come, old ones had left. New friendships
would evolve, while old ones would dissolve. Things were horribly far away
for some people, horribly close for others. This seemed to be exciting, yet
frightening, and good but bad. Painful memories clouded and darkened peo
ples’ minds, while the hope of making new, better, and more important ones
was exhilarating. It was time to break away from the parental guided tour,
and to weave your own, personal path through life. Everything that had
seemed easy or simple would remove its mask and reveal its true difficulty.
There would be no more clinging to the teacher’s leg when things seemed to
go too hard. It was time to be your own person. This day was much more
than just the marker of a new school year. It was the marker of the day you
climbed onto the next rung of the ladder of life.
