Key losses and a new league hamper Varsity Hoop’s Hopes For Winning Season
No matter how you look at it, the Varsity Basketball season was not a winning one. One could cop out and attribute it to being a “ rebuilding year,’’ but the record shows that CBA has been in a “ rebuilding year’’ for quite some time. Some of the prob lems which have hampered the bas ketball program in the past few years have been a lack of height, frequent coaching changes, more competitive opponents, and a lack of fan atten dance.
First-yearCoachBuddyWIeklinski found himself thrown into the highly competitive Onondaga County High School League with an extremely small squad. Matters only got worse with the unexpected departure of a couple of players, including the start ing center. To top it all off. Junior Tom
Robb was lost midway through the season for the rest of the year with an ankle injury.
As one would expect, the season was a tough one. After many hard- fought losses in the beginning of the season, the Brothers attained their first victory, on the road, at Fulton. Senior Captain, Mike Herring, won the game with an 18-footer at the buzzer. The second half of the season looked very promising after this im portant win. However, the Brothers were able to find that winning combi nation only a couple of more times during the rest of the season.
The truly positive aspect of the team is its youth. Coach WIeklinski adopted the philosophy of playing for the future as he started one fresh man, a sophomore, two juniors, and
Herring, the only senior. Freshman Mark Adams is a real prospect to watch in the future. With a couple of years’ experience under his belt, to go along with good quickness and a great outside shot, he should be a dominant player for CBA in the com ing years. Juniors Neil Maurer and Mike Kavanagh showed real prom ise for next year with their aggressive style of play. Herring put in a team- high 17 points a game from the guard slot. Players who contributed off the bench were Senior Pat Conole and Junior Carl Hummel.
Coach WIeklinski hopes that all this experience for the young players in the Varsity ranks will enable his team to return to the glory days of old.
