between the classes
In a major upset comparable to OCC defeating the
Syracuse Orangemen, the Junior class defeated the Sen
iors in the 1983 Winter Week competition. As noted by
Student Senate President Chris Edwards, “the Juniors
taking more than one place in the minor events proved to
be the factor which put them ahead of the Seniors by 20
points going into the final day.” The Juniors held on to win
by a convincing margin.
Some noteworthy changes were instituted by the Stu
dent Senate in hopes of producing a more efficient,
smoothly run activity. These changes included rewriting of
the rules, and a reduction in the time of competition from
five days to four, in response to underclassman transpor
tation troubles.
Some highlights of the week included the awesome
performance in the pie-eating contest by Superior Senior
Jim Phelps, who inhaled a chocolate cream pie inone
minute, eighteen seconds, defeating his closest competi
tion by almost a minute. In the soccer competition, the
Seniors, behind Kent Hitchcock’s offensive prowess,
rallied from an early deficit to defeat the Juniors 6-3.
In arm-wrestling competition. Seniors John Fitzgerald
and David Ritter took first and second, respectively, ina
match decided by a coin flip because the combatants
were opposite handed. Ping-pong competition saw Junior
Steve Etoll advance to the finals while competing in bas
ketball between matches. He was defeated in the finals by
his classmate, Eric Unger.
In LaCrosse action, the Juniors were awarded first
place after controversies regarding substitutions led to
forfeits by the Seniors and Sophomores. In the Basketball
68
final, the Seniors eked out a 39-38 win over the Juniors,
