Environmental Baseline Study of Municipal Solid Waste Dumpsite, Rishikesh, Uttarakhand

               9.0 Discussion:

In the present study, following parameters results discussion are given below:

Arsenic: According to Municipal Solid Waste (Management & Handling) Rules, 2016 and SWM
Manual desirable limit of Arsenic is 10 mg/kg. Main source of Arsenic is from timber treatment, waste

from agriculture chemicals, pharmaceuticals and metallic alloy waste. In all samples arsenic is below

               the desirable limits.

Nickel: According to Municipal Solid Waste (Management & Handling) Rules, 2016 and SWM
Manual desirable limit of Nickel is 50 mg/kg. Most nickel waste from within manufacturing processes,

such as battery production. At Up-gradient waste nickel was ranges from 7.52mg/kg to 8.34mg/kg. And
in down gradient waste nickel ranges from 16.41mg/kg to 18.20mg/kg.

Zinc: According to Municipal Solid Waste (Management & Handling) Rules, 2016 and SWM Manual

desirable limit of Zinc is 1000mg/kg. Many foodstuffs contain certain concentration of zinc. Zinc is
added during industrial waste, mining and steel processing. At Up-gradient waste zinc was ranges from

72.97 mg/kg to 77.40 mg/kg. And in down gradient waste zinc ranges from 16.85 mg/kg to
               21.74mg/kg.

Cadmium: According to Municipal Solid Waste (Management & Handling) Rules, 2016 and SWM
Manual desirable limit of Cadmium is 5 mg/kg. There are various sources of cadmium in waste such as

use of phosphate fertilizers, presence in sewage sludge, Cd batteries plating and plastics. At Up-

gradient waste cadmium was ranges from 0.621mg/kg to 0.819 mg/kg. And in down gradient waste
               cadmium ranges from 2.98 mg/kg to 4.01 mg/kg.

Copper: According to Municipal Solid Waste (Management & Handling) Rules, 2016 and SWM
Manual desirable limit of copper is 50 mg/kg. Copper may be introduced in waste from electronic

plating, wire drawing, copper polishing, paint manufacturing. At Down-gradient (2meter Depth)

(2meter Depth) waste copper was ranges from 3.41 mg/kg to 7.05 mg/kg. And in Up-gradient waste
               copper ranges from 23.44 mg/kg to 32.15 mg/kg.
