Science Y1 – Ears to hear – week 3
7. Divide the class into groups. Have some do experiments with a helper, while
others complete the worksheet they started the previous week.
• Take a group of children outside to investigate how sound gradually
decreases in loudness the farther we are from its source. Have a
child make a noise, e.g. beat a high chime bar, at which signal the
children with their backs to the sound take three large steps away from
it. Repeat until the children cannot hear the sound, at which point they
can turn around and see how far the sound has spread.
• Have some children rest an ear on one end of a table. Another child
scratches the other end of the table with a finger-nail. Can they hear the
scratching? Ask the children to lift their heads off the table. Can they
hear the finger-nail scratching now? Which way does sound travel
best? Through something solid like wood or through the air?
Can sound travel through water? What about at the swimming pool? Can
you hear sounds when you are swimming under water?
