Science Y1 – Energy and movement – week 2
Use bat and ball. If we want the ball to go
                              • straight up in the air, where do we apply the force?

(Directly underneath it, in the same direction.)
                              • across the room? You must place the bat behind the ball in the
same direction. Demonstrate and draw on the board.

(Do some hitting with bats and balls in the next PE Lesson and let them
                       experience this for themselves.)

           5. Now let’s see what happens when we apply forces in the opposite direction.
Bring in the trolley and ask two children to both push the trolley from
opposite ends. *Do make sure caution is exercised so that no-one gets run

                  over.

Why does the trolley not move? How might it move? (If one force were
stronjger than the other force it would overcome that force and cause the
trolley to move. Begin to sow in the word ‘overcome.’)

           6. Repeat, asking two different children to pull in opposite directions,

           7. It matters which direction you apply the force in. If you want the trolley, or
anything else to move, you have to be clear in your mind which way to go, and
work together. It’s like being in a team.

Similarly in life, direction matters. We want to walk the Jesus way, which takes

us closer and closer to the Father, We don’t want to be drawn off in the wrong
                  direction. Direction certainly matters,

           Learning for Life (Fulfilment)

The children will begin to appreciate the spiritual lessons which can be learnt from
forces as well as the factual knowledge they will have acquired about forces and
           movement.
