Science Y6 – Marvellous Me – lesson 13

When you rest, your cells aren't working very hard, so they need less oxygen. They also produce less carbon
dioxide. This means that you don't need to breathe as often as when you're moving around. Remember that
because the heart and lungs work as a team, when your lungs are not working hard, your heart is not working
        hard either.

        Why do we yawn?

Your brain tells your lungs to take in more air so you breathe deeply to take in more air to help you to wake up.

        Why do we hiccup?

A hiccup occurs when you breathe in and out quickly. After each breath your voice-box closes with a snap and
makes you give a hiccup. There are lots of reasons why we hiccup but we can stop it by trying to drink a cup of
water by bending over the cup and drinking it from the wrong side.
