KING ALFRED AND THE VIKINGS
Truth to Teach
This project seeks to discover the influence of a godly king in an ungodly age. A godly king
rules with wisdom from God and so affects his nation for good, leaving an inheritance which
is a blessing.
Proverbs 8:15 ‘By me (wisdom) kings reign and rulers make laws that are just.’
• To give pupils a chronological understanding of this period of history.
• To examine the effects of the Anglo-Saxon settlement
• To examine the effects of the Viking settlement
• To appreciate how a godly king faces and deals with challenges
• To give opportunity for historical enquiry, discovering about events, people and
changes in society
• To further equip pupils with skills to organise and present historical information

Learning for Life
The pupils will appreciate the importance of a ruler operating under God’s laws. They
will become more aware that leadership carries responsibility which affects people
and nations.
The children will have greater background knowledge of life in England during the
Anglo-Saxon and Viking times.
