Lesson 12
                                        ARCHIMEDES’ EXPERIMENTS

        Archimedes Screw

Aim: To make a cornflake dispenser

Equipment: Large plastic drinks bottle (one or two litre)
                       Drawing pin
                       Wooden dowel (stick)

                       Card
                       Sticky tape
                       Sharp craft knife

Method: 1. Cut the bottom off the plastic bottle. Cut a triangular piece out of the

                              neck of the bottle.
                       2. Cut six circles of card, each with the same circumference as the bottle.
                       3. Cut a hole in the centre of each piece of card, with the same
                              circumference as the wooden dowel.

                       4. Cut a slit in each circle from the centre hole to the edge.
                       5. Stick the circles together to make a spiral.
                       6. Fix the spiral around the dowel.
                       7. Push the spiral into the plastic bottle. Secure the end of the dowel to the
bottle lid with a drawing pin.

                       8. Put the bottle upside down in a bowl of cornflakes. Twist the free end of
the dowel. Cornflakes should be drawn up the bowl.

        Observations:

        Conclusion:

        Draw your cornflake dispenser.
