Symmetry puzzles mirror, 1 cm squared

                                                                            paper or RM A

This shape has 2 axes of symmetry "V ^

a Draw more shapes using 9 squares ^>^
that have 2 axes of symmetry.

              b Try again, this time
                 using  12 squares.
                 Record your findings.

             Mark the axes o/ symmetry
                 on your drawings.

Cut out 2 shapes like this:
                 Fit the 2 shapes together
in different ways to make larger shapes
                with 2 axes of symmetry.
c Try again, this time using 2 matching
                shapes made from 8 squares.
                                                                           Use a mirror to check.

      BBS
o Place a mirror on this triangle
             so that you can see:

             a a large square
             b a kite
             c an isosceles triangle.

a Investigate other shapes you can make
by placing a mirror on the triangle.

b Draw some of the interesting ones.
Can your friend decide where you
placed the mirror to make these shapes?

         CHALLENGE

         • Use the shape in

         • Investigate ways to place a mirror so that you
           can see 1 square, 2 squares ... 18 squares.
