5.10 Youth Day
Unisa LIS commemorated Youth Day on 22 June 2023. Twenty-two individuals attended the hybrid event conducted in the Muckleneuk Library online, while around 60 people attended in person. Mr Gudani Magwaba, Treasurer General of the Unisa Student Representative Council (SRC), presented on the theme: “How can the youth take charge of the struggles facing them today”. Prof Tendayi Sithole from the Department of Political Sciences in the College of Human Sciences responded to the presentation. Thought-provoking discussions took place during the event, and the Unisa staff choir delighted the audience with their performance.

5.11 South African Librarians’ Day
The Library and Information Association of South Africa (LIASA) declared 10 July 2023 a special day to honour and celebrate librarians. The day was also used to raise awareness of the profession through various platforms, and to highlight the value added by librarians in contributing towards optimal access to relevant information, thereby developing an informed nation. Unisa LIS hosted an online webinar in collaboration with LIASA attended by 110 people. Mr Charlie Molepo, LIASA President-Elect from the University of the Free State, Mr Morris Mabasa, Chief Librarian of the Department of Defence and Dr Collence Chisita from the Department of Information Science at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) gave presentations during the webinar. The presentations and discussions focused on librarianship, the promotion of the LIS profession and the future of librarianship.
