• Ms M Mokgele presented a paper entitled “Exploring the use of mobile technologies for support through access to resources for students in an ODL institution” at the 2023 LIASA Conference in Cape Town on 11 October.
• Ms M Bierman presented a poster entitled “Outreach beyond the campus: investigating the extension of academic library services beyond the campus, in collaboration with partner public libraries” at the 2023 LIASA Conference in Cape Town.

8.3.6 Staff development
LIS staff annually attend various Human Resource Development offerings. During 2023, LIS staff attended national and international online workshops, webinars, Zoom training, courses and assemblies. These conferences, workshops and training sessions provided valuable training and development opportunities for staff. Some of the conferences attended by Library staff were the following:
• LIASA National Conference, which was held in Cape Town from 10 to 13 October 2023.
• Unisa ODeL Conference, which was held in Kempton Park from 15 to 17 August 2023. The theme of
the Conference was “ODeL in the global South Africa: opportunities in times of volatility, uncertainty,
complexity and ambiguity”.
• Higher Education Leadership and Management Workshop, which had a special focus on developing
leadership and management strategies in the educational sector.
• University of Pretoria: International Symposium on User Experience, which was held from 19 to 21
September 2023 at the University of Pretoria Groenkloof Campus in Pretoria.
• University of Johannesburg (UJ): International Conference 2023, which was held from 12 to 13
September 2023 with the theme “Imagining Sustainability”.
• The LIS staff also participate in and attend continuous development programmes annually within their
respective areas of interest and expertise to ensure that their skills and knowledge are maintained, and to align these with the institutional objectives and needs of the Library. The identification of skills development programmes is managed annually through individual personal development plans,
which are aligned to the LIS operational plan and talent management initiatives within the department.
