Science Day
th
Is this day, 18 November unique to you? Do you still remember what did you do in school on
this day every year? It is actually Science Day! The Science Day this year highlights the significant
role and relevance of science in our daily lives and these essential messages are conveyed to the
readers in a form of digital poster. With this, it encourages students to use their creative imagination
to create a concise and informative poster, which contains scientific principle and explanation. The
following are the most favourable topics among our students:
•Environmental Health Science
•Food Science
•Medical Science
•Astronomy and etc.
As Peter Medawar explained, "Scientists are building explanatory structures, telling stories which are scrupulously tested to see if they are
stories about real life" (Medawar, 1984, p. 133, emphasis in original). By "telling stories," it means that students have to piece together
bits of information and events in a sensible way so that the contents of the poster are not just making things up out of nothing but based
on concrete evidence. Students were required to share their ideas that include objective, introduction and prospective solutions in their
posters. This event helps to initiate and develop students’ creativity in the process of scientific development. The importance of Science has
been well-known for ages and the success in science requires a creative and inquisitive mind. In future, we hope our well-nurtured students
would contribute back to our society with their learned knowledge, by solving problems we are facing such as the use of incinerator
bottom ash in concrete (NEWS and project in Singapore), medical treatment for Covid-19 (Molnupiravir and Paxlovid) and launching of
autonomous vehicles (driverless SMRT buses) to greatly improve road traffic safety.
