            30 LANGSTONE CLIFF TOURNAMENT
                                                     LANGSTONE CLIFF TOURNAMENT
The opening event was the usual “Get to know you” bowls
drive where all the payers are mixed up for a great fun
evening. The battle turned out to be between two triples.
George Blackburn, Maurice Kibby & Paul Walden who
stood at plus 9 after 12 ends, with Graham Whittock, John
Crocker& Vionne Thornhill who were plus 8 after the same
12 ends but suddenly strode ahead and finished up on
plus 20 whilst Paul, Maurice & Kibby just failed at plus 14.
In the singles quarter finals, Tony Gepp was too good
for Rene Morgan and ran out 12 - 3. Ian Ford recorded
an easy 8 - victory over Lorraine Axtell but Wendy Ford
Singles finalist Gerald could find no answer to Mark Hollis who ran out 10 - 0.
                Singles finalist Gerald
            Williams and winner Ian Ford
            Williams and winner Ian Ford
Completing the round in a very hard fought game, Gerald
Williams edged home 6 - 3 over John Lawes.
In the semi-finals Gerald kept up his good run and beat Mark Hollis 9 - 5. Also making it
into the final, Ian Ford beat Tony Gepp 8 - 3. On paper we seemed to be in for a close final but
as sometimes happens one player has the indian sign over another and Ian For beat Gerald
             Williams 9 - 1 with ends unplayed.
In the pairs Quarter finals Ian & Wendy Ford had too much for Lorraine Axtell & John Hor-
sham, who were well below their best and lost 12 - 2. Diane & Bert Butterfield also had a very
comfortable 10 - 2 victory over Mark & Sue Hollis. Keeping up the run of easy victories Michael
             Keevil & Eddie Aheir recorded a 12 - 4 over Val Lucas & Phil Toogood. A closer score of 9 - 5
saw Marion & Dennis Greenway beat Angela & David Buck.
In the semi-finals a cracking game emerged from the battle between Marion & Dennis
and Michael Keevil & Eddie Aheir, with the latter scoring a 10 - 8 scoreline. The other semi was
also hard fought but Bert & Diane Butterfield couldn’t stop Ian & Wendy Ford winning 9 - 6. In
the final Ian & Wendy recorded a stunning 10 - 1 championship win over Michael & Eddie.
In the triples quarters, in a very low scoring “Derby” game, Garth Willis, Les Woodward &
Don Mason edged out Carol Robbins, Doreen & Eric Hasker by 5 shots to 4. Paul Walden,
Margaret & Bob Stock edged home 9 - 6 over Gerald Williams, Dennis & Marion Greenwell,
helped by a last end two. David Buck, Val & Graham Cannock had an easier 12 - 5 result over
Rene Morgan, Cynthia Riley & Bryan Ennis. The last Quarter final saw Tony Gepp, Mark Hollis
& Sheila King romped home 17 - 1 over Helen Keevil, Graham & Betty Whittock.
Tony, Mark & Sheila kept up this streak of form in their semi-final with an 11 - 1 win over
David Buck, Val & Graham Cannock. In the other semi Garth Willis, Les Woodward & Don
Mason had a much tougher time in beating Paul Walden, Margaret & Bob Stock 9 - 7. In the
final, Garth Willis, Les Woodward & Don Mason led 8 - 7 after seven ends but a spurt for Tony
Gepp, Mark Hollis & Sheila King got them home as tournament champions 12 - 9.

           Puntastic!
             1) Evidence has been found that William Tell and his family were avid bowlers. Unfortunately,
all the Swiss League records were destroyed in fire....and so we'll never know for whom the
             Tells bowled.
             2) A man rushed into a busy doctor's surgery and shouted, "Doctor! I think I'm shrinking!"The
doctor calmly responded, "Now, settle down. You'll just have to be a little patient."
             3) An Indian chief was feeling very sick, so he summoned the medicine man. After a brief ex-
amination, the medicine man took out a long, thin strip of elk rawhide and gave it to the chief,
telling him to bite off, chew and swallow one inch of the leather every day. After a month, the
medicine man returned to see how the chief was feeling. The chief shrugged and said, "The
thong is ended, but the malady lingers on."
