                                                             SPRING TOURNAMENT
                                                     Now in its 20th year of hosting Short Mat Bowls Tourna-
                                                     ments, this very popular hotel was once again the venue
                                                     for another outstanding event. As ever the first evening
                                                     started with a “get to know you” bowls drive, with all the
                                                     players mixed up in this fun event. In the end Betty Whit-
                                                     tock, Dianne Butterfield, John Lawes & Rene Morgan
                                                     won with a large plus of 20 shots.
                                                            The  second  event  to  be  completed  was  the
                                                     evening 2 bowl singles. At the quarter final stage Mau-

             and Runner-up David Buck                - 8.  Tony Gepp was pushed all the way by Richard
              and Runner-up David Buck
                                                     Williams and a last end single edged Tony into the next
              round 6 - 5. Previous winner Michael Bell had an easier
              task against John Redstone with a 9 - 4 victory.  With a
              similar margin David Buck beat Sandra Odams 11 - 5.
                    The semi-final between Tony Gepp and Michael
              Bell was a Titanic struggle but once again with a last end
              single Tony won 9 - 8.  In the other semi-final, Maurice
              Kibby fought hard against David Buck but couldn’t pre-
              vent David winning 7 - 4 with two ends still to go.  In the
              final Tony Gepp kept up his good form and eventually
              beat David Buck 9 - 3 with the last end unplayed.
                    In the Pairs quarters Tony was still in great form and
              with Sheila King beat Val Lucas & Phil Toogood 11 - 5. A
              last end three Gave Val & Graham Cannock a 10 - 5 vic-
              tory over Kath Francombe & Maureen Stutsbury-Palmer.
              Mike Davis & Cynthia Riley also had a comfortable 12 -              Seated Pairs winners

              the semi-final line-up, Eve & Les Woodward beat Mary &                 with runners up,

              In the semi’s Eve & Les faced Mike Davis & Cynthia
                                                            Riley, who edged in front after seven ends and
                                                            went on to win 8 - 5. In the other semi, Tony Gepp
                                                            & Sheila King faced
                                                                 Val & Graham Cannock. At one stage Tony
                                                            & Sheila were 8 - 1 down but consecutive three’s
                                                            brought them back into the match but they were
                                                            still two shots down going into the last end, on
                                                            which they scored a  full house four to snatch an
                                                            11 - 9 victory.
                                                                 In the final Tony & Sheila were in sparkling
                                                            form  and romped home 12 - 3 over Mike Davis &
                                                            Cynthia Riley.
