Horley taking bronze
Horley taking bronze
A team of 4 Horley bowlers were asked to repre-
sent Reigate & Banstead at the Better Games
55+ Olympics, now in its 13th year.
The event is sponsored by Greenwich
Leisure Ltd who run Better Leisure which is a
non profit organisation who sponsor Olympic
Athletes. Better Leisure runs Horley Leisure
Center on Court Lodge where there is a very
active 60+ programme worth checking out.
The aim of the games is to encourage and
promote a healthy and active lifestyle to people
of all ages however targeting people of our age group specifically. 700 competitors from all over
London and much further afield descended on the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park to battle it
out in 10 different sports at the iconic Copper Box. Our intrepid team of Coral, Cherie, David F
and Ivor swapped their burgundy & white club shirts for a gorgeous grey borough tee shirt.
Playing against 16 other teams in the short mat section our guys finished a very creditable
3rd taking the bronze medal which they are seen proudly wearing over their Horley Bowls Club
jackets. Out of interest we beat Epsom & Ewell, Sutton and Greenwich on our way to the
bronze. Gold medal winners were Waltham Forest and Silver went to Islington.
As if their day wasn’t exciting enough 2 of the team were interviewed by a Channel 5
reporter for a feature on the 5 O’clock news! Well done David & Cherie you came across very
well even after editing. It was a long 12 Hr day for our guys but a great experience which they
all enjoyed and just shows what opportunities can present themselves when being a member
of Horley Bowling Club and getting out there being active.
