Worthing and District League

he League consist of over 400 bowlers in 12 clubs across the
District. It is not affiliated to the E.S.M.B.A. as it considers it does
not need to consider travelling across the County to play in
Leagues when its current League games can all be played within
the confines of the District.
The Celebration 5s 2020
The Third Celebration 5s Match took place at West Park School
with all league clubs supporting the event. The competition is
played as a combination
between one set of pairs (5 ends) and then a set of triples (6 ends). So, everyone arrived
in good time for the event to start on time. The competition is split between two groups
of teams, 7 teams in each group.
Group A's first set of results
saw Durrington winning their first 3
games to set the pace with East Pre-
ston winning 2 and 1 defeat which
came at the hands of Durrington. As
the morning progressed Durrington
still had the edge over East Preston
A but when Durrington lost to Winners East Preston “A”
Susses Saints it was all square
with East Preston A on 10 points and Durrington also on 10 points. But it was East
Preston A that went through to the final with a better shot difference. All the other teams in
the group were beating each other
with Heene-Woodside the next best
with defeats to East Preston and Dur-
rington to finish with 8 points (see
below results).
In Group B it was a much closer
run thing with Foxwood, Tarring and
Finalistsa Foxwood Old Barn setting the pace. After the
first 4 games they all had 6 points and
Tarring were also in there with 5 points. Foxwood winning their last 2 games with one defeat
to Tarring topped the group with 10 points. Worthing, losing the next 2 games, fell away and
finished with 6 points, Tarring (last year's winners) finished with 9 points after one defeat to
Foxwood and drawing their first game with Arun. Old Barn were next with 8 points, they
came unstuck against an Angmering side who were playing for pride which gave them the
2nd win of the day, so it was Foxwood verses East Preston A in the final.
It started so well for Foxwood with the pairs they led 6-1 after 3 ends and set the pace
for the triples with a 7-2 lead after 6 ends so the triples played for the next 7 ends either to
win it
for Foxwood or for East Preston to make a comeback. You would think Foxwood
would just consolidate their lead, but East Preston had other ideas and their plan worked
as after 10 ends they had pulled it back to be just 2 points behind at 8-6. Into the last 3
ends, East Preston were on a mission to win, to which Foxwood had no answer and won
all the ends scoring 1-2-2 to win the triples 9-1 and the match 11-8.
So East Preston A are this year’s winners and all monies raised on the day (£250.00)
were donated to St Barnabas which was East Preston's charity of choice. A total of 66 play-
ers and guests were present on the day and a big thank you for taking part also to Jim Gray
and Paul Mason.
