INTRODUCTION
Welcome to the HPB Team at TGH. We want to thank you in advance for your hard work. This is a tough rotation but one that
will be full of learning opportunities and fulfilment. This handbook has been designed primarily as a guide to the residents and
clinical fellows on the unit.
In general, it is expected that the residents will be working under the close supervision of the staff and fellows but it is
accepted that, with all these jobs being so busy, communication is not always easy, and there may be delays in getting a
chance to discuss things.
This handbook is designed to get around this problem. Wherever it is possible to define a ‘unit policy’ on a certain matter,
this has been done, and the resulting consensus forms the basis of these guidelines.
It is important to recognise that a guideline is only a recommendation, and not a binding rule. There will be situations in
which some variation will be necessary - if such a circumstance seems to have arisen, it is better to get advice early, rather
than try to avoid ‘worrying’ a senior member of the team. All members of the team are happy to be woken up for patient
related issues.
This handbook will inevitably require refinement and updating - please feel free to suggest changes. Please do not
unilaterally make changes to these guidelines.
MISSION STATEMENT AND OBJECTIVES
The HPB surgical oncology team aims to provide excellence in the care of complex HPB cancer patients at all stages of their
illness. It is important for the house staff to remember that caring for these patients is a unique privilege requiring great
attention to detail, honesty, integrity and compassion. The 5 HPB surgeons comprising this team have developed an
integrated joint practice including shared inpatient coverage.
