Lesson 7: Alternatives to Gangs and Crime
The best way to stay away from gangs and crime is to find alternatives. Try other things that you enjoy. Focus on
positive things that won’t cause you trouble or harm.
Go to school and try your best. When school is out participate in after-school activities.
This isn’t always easy because we don’t always have the help we we need like help with homework, transportation, money, and other necessities. But this is how we learn to be resourceful.
Scenario: Be Resourceful
It was summer and the gang activity was heating up in the neighborhood. Swaggy thought to himself, “I need to
find something to do so I don’t get caught up in any trouble”.
One thing he always wanted to do was go to the swimming pool at Dogg Park. All the pup doggs talked about how fun it was. They had swim competitions, played water polo, and they even had a diving board to show off their dog tricks.
But Swaggy didn’t know how to swim. They were offering free swimming lessons and Swaggy really wanted to learn. He didn’t have a Big Dogg at home to take him and his Granny didn’t have a car.
Swaggy had a little sister everyone called “Skittles”. Swaggy was complaining to Skittles about how he needs to get a ride to the pool so he can learn to swim. Skittles said, “I got an idea, why don’t you call Mr. Willy the Watchdog that works at the park
and tell him your dilemma.
