DR. OPPENHEIMER: I have a telephone call --
The Bartender nods to the far end of the bar.
A BAR GIRL smiles and winks at him as he goes. He puts
his fingers to his lips, points at the phone.
DR. OPPENHEIMER: (truly apologetic) My wife -- I am
married, I'm sorry.
AT THE PHONE: He listens. His expression immediately
serious.
DR. OPPENHEIMER:
Yes, yes I am reading you, General.
-- But we are here on Convention - I don't have my records
or my hard drive -- What? - Why OF COURSE the
coordinates are out of date! I've been saying this for years!
Since 1987, 1 have said: 'You must update these active
silos!' Yes, yes - what? No, I doubt very seriously those
weapons can be diverted to domestic targets. (pause,
listens) -- Why, they would continue to their cold war
destinations: Moscow, Siberia -- Pe- king perhaps.
Without seeing the data, I couldn't say. (a long pause, he
shakes his head slowly) General. I hate to say it, but I told
them so. -- I will take the first available transport back to
Los Alamos. (a pause)
-- What more can I do, General? The
damage apparently is already in progress! You must
notify the President -- he must alert our allies and
especially our enemies! What can I tell you? (he hangs up,
calls to Bartender) Please, call me a taxi at once! It's an
emergency!
BARTENDER:
(holds up index finger, points at him) Okay
pops -- you're a taxi --. (
