He crosses to the refrigerator door.
SERGEANT MORRISON: Just a minute, before you do
that -- .
The two M.P.'s turn, annoyed at this unusual behavior.
SERGEANT MORRISON: (to Gen. Yeager) Could I have
your autograph, Sir? (to Second M.P.) Can I borrow your
pen?
The First M.P. pulls the handle to the massive stainless
steel door, which opens with a fog of icy air.
GEN.YEAGER: Sergeant, do you realize that by helping
these people mutiny you are courting death by hanging?
SERGEANT MORRISON: (without hesitation, likea slogan)
Yes, Sir. But I prefer death to godlessness, Sir.
The Second M.P. motions with the long rifle he carries,
and Gen. Yeager, with dignity, enters the refrigerated
room.
GEN. YEAGER: In the refrigerator. Registers total shock.
WHAT THE GENERAL SEES: Stacked on top of one
another, heads- to-feet in symmetrical pilings, are the
bodies of dead Airmen.
Some on the top have spilled their blood onto those
below. All of them have ghost-white faces, except those
who have been wounded in the facial area. It is like
refrigerated sides of beef, only former fellow officers and
men.
Gen. Yeager gags at the smell, staggers backwards at the
same time the door closes and the automatic lights shut
off.
