P. 50

General? You only show up for trouble. We've got no

trouble here. (looks over at Lt. Wharton) Stay with us,

Lieutenant.

The lieutenant steps back from the doorway.

GEN.YEAGER: Red, you've cut back communications

for no explanation. We know several NORAD security

systems are down. Also you’ve deployed the invisiTech

shield without authorization and for no reason we know

about.

MAJ. GEN. SORKIN: Aha. So you are here as part of

anofficial Air Force Intelligence reconnaissance.

GEN.YEAGER: You mean, is this an official

investigation? -- Yes.

MAJ. GEN. SORKIN: You are investigating my base? My

command? My air- men, my officers?

GEN.YEAGER: That's right.

MAJ. GEN. SORKIN: How many years have you served

the Air Force, Bif? (not waiting for an answer) -- Since you

were a kid. A lifetime. Like myself, a life- time. You know

they're tying to shut us down? Fold up our tents? Return

us to the Army? The Army! Can you imagine you and me

in the Army?

In emphasis, he grabs a cigar from an open box, flips

open an antique Zippo lighter, which flames up.

GEN.YEAGER: We know that the new budget will

downsize some of our units ...

MAJ. GEN. SORKIN: -- And you are sent by intelligence.
