WHEREAS: On behalf of the City of Lansing, we join today to celebrate the 38th Annual Dr. Martin
Luther King, Jr. Day of Celebration and to honor his legacy and vision; and
WHEREAS: As the longest running commission of its kind in the nation, the Dr. Martin Luther King
Jr. Commission of Mid-Michigan continues the tradition of honoring one of this country’s finest and
most inspiring sons; and
WHEREAS: The theme for the 38th Annual celebration, “Now is the time to lift our nation from the
quicksands of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood.,” reminds us that we must join together to
lift each other up and never stop pursuing justice in all aspects of our lives; and
WHEREAS: The City of Lansing is a welcoming community where we strive to strengthen our
understanding and practice in providing equal dignity, respect, and opportunity for all who live and visit
our city; and
WHEREAS: Over half a century ago, from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther
King, Jr. inspired a movement for equal opportunity, equal rights, and for a more perfect union. Today,
Dr. King represents how far our nation has come, the change that is made possible when we stand
together as a union and is a constant reminder that our duty to serve is not yet done; and
WHEREAS: I am so happy that we are once again able to gather together in person at this Day of
Celebration event to honor and celebrate Dr. King, his legacy, and his memory.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Andy Schor, Mayor of the City of Lansing, by the power vested in me do

hereby proclaim January 16 , 2023, as:
“Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day”
in Lansing. I encourage all Lansing citizens to join communities across the nation to honor and celebrate
Dr. King’s life and teachings.
