Psalm 91
1 God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.
2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, 3 though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.
4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells.
5 God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day.
6 Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall; he lifts his voice, the earth melts.
7 The LORD Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.
8 Come and see what the LORD has done, the desolations he has brought on the earth.
9 He makes wars cease to the ends of the earth. He breaks the bow and shatters the spear; he burns the shields with fire.
10 He says, ‘Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.’
11 The LORD Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.
Sunday June 30 - Hardwired for home
God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Psalm 46:1
It’s thought by some that the writer of this psalm was Hezekiah, King of Israel, and that it was written around the time that Jerusalem was besieged by the Assyrians. It’s unclear whether it was a personal pep talk to remind the writer of who God is, in the face of adversity, or simply written on a good day as a celebration of the trustworthiness of God. Either way, it’s good practice to regularly rehearse the truths we know about God so that when the road gets rough we have something of substance to draw upon. It also militates against the inclination to feel that God is distant and that we are without hope. God won’t ignore us if we cry out to him in times of trouble, but staying close to him as a lifestyle is the better way.
Although the world’s first two people, Adam and Eve, severed their relationship with God through sin, all humanity is still ‘hardwired for home’ – to be close to God. For those who have put their trust in Jesus this has already happened. We’ve been restored to God’s family and nothing will ever again separate us from his love. For those who are not yet believers there’s still the assurance that God is near – all we need to do is reach out and receive Jesus as our Saviour.
Father God, thank you that you are always with me. Help me today to live in the good of this truth. Amen.
