THIS WEEK’S BIBLE INSIGHTS ARE BY:
Ian Moore and are based on Hebrews 1 (NIV)
IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO READ MORE ON THIS WEEK’S MAJOR THEME:
John 1:1-18 and Colossians 1:15-23
1 In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe. 3 The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. 4 So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to
theirs.
8 But about the Son he says, “Your
throne, O God, will last for ever and ever; a sceptre of justice will be the sceptre of your kingdom. 9 You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions by anointing you with the oil of joy.”
13 To which of the angels did God ever say, “Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet”? 14 Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?
Sunday August 25 - Jesus: the Word made flesh In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets... but in
these last days he has spoken to us by his Son... Hebrews 1:1-2
The letter to the Hebrews was written to Jewish Christians facing intense persecution. Satan’s attack was two-pronged: physical persecution and spiritual heresy, both seeking to downgrade Jesus by challenging his deity and the authenticity of God’s word. Unless countered, this onslaught would inevitably result in a falling away of believers and weakening of their faith. The same danger still exists today, so let’s consider this edition of Living Light not from a historical standpoint, but rather as a contemporary and empowering message for each of us.
The author of the letter may be unknown, but the subject matter is crystal clear: the supremacy of Jesus Christ, who is superior to angels, Moses, the Sabbath, the High Priest, the Old Covenant, the temple and its every sacrifice. The Jewish nation didn’t always honour its prophets, but it knew their importance: “Surely the Sovereign Lord does nothing without revealing his plan to his servants the prophets” (Amos 3:7). The apostle Peter acknowledged Jesus’ supremacy when he quoted Deuteronomy 18:15: “For Moses said, ‘The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your own people; you must listen to everything he tells you’” (Acts 3:22).
If we are wise, we will choose to filter everything through the words of Christ. Jesus is not simply another prophet to be added to the mix. He is God, the Word made flesh. So let’s listen to him!
Dear Heavenly Father, today I place Jesus, my Lord, Saviour, Prophet and King high above all else. Speak, Lord, for your servant listens. Amen.
