Friday August 15 - Darkness and the curtain torn
With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last. The curtain of the temple was torn
in two from top to bottom. Mark 15:37-38
The curtain separating the Holy of Holies from the rest of the temple represented the barrier between humanity and God. The tearing of the curtain symbolises the end of separation. Through Jesus’ death, we are given direct access to God’s presence. We no longer need a mediator, for Christ has become our High Priest.
We no longer need intermediaries or elaborate rituals to approach God. Through prayer and faith, we can boldly come directly to the throne of grace (Hebrews 4:16). We can communicate with him through prayer, study his Word and experience his love and guidance in our lives.
This truth is a profound invitation to draw near to God with confidence, knowing that he hears our prayers and desires to be in a relationship with us. This encourages us to cultivate a personal relationship with God and challenges us to live in awareness of his constant presence and guidance in our lives.
Are there areas in your life where you feel distant from him? Remember that, through Jesus, you can approach the throne of grace freely. Spend time today in prayer, thanking God for his presence and drawing near to him.
Lord, thank you for tearing the veil and drawing us near. Help us to live in the fullness of your presence each day. Amen.
Saturday August 16 - The burial of Jesus
So, Joseph bought some linen cloth, took down the body, wrapped it in the linen, and placed it in a tomb cut out of rock. Mark 15:46
When Jesus was crucified, Joseph, despite the social and religious implications, courageously approached Pilate to request the body of Jesus. This act of devotion reminds us of the importance of honouring Jesus in every circumstance. While the world viewed Jesus as defeated, Joseph recognised him as Lord and treated him with love and reverence.
The careful burial of Jesus’ body in a new tomb was essential for fulfilling the prophecies surrounding his death and resurrection. Bible prophecy foretold that Jesus would be buried in a rich man’s tomb (Isaiah 53:9), and Joseph, a wealthy man, provided his new tomb for Jesus’ burial (Matthew 27:60).
This example challenges us to live courageously and make decisions that glorify God and align with his will, even when it means going against the grain. It reminds us that true faith requires us to step outside our comfort zones and embrace the risks that come with following Christ. Like Joseph, we can offer our devotion through acts of love and service, trusting in the hope of resurrection.
Reflect on how you can honour Jesus in your life today. Even small acts of kindness and faithfulness can demonstrate your love for him.
Lord, teach us to honour you in all circumstances. May our lives reflect our love and devotion to you. Amen.
