At two recent funerals, I have been asked to speak for Psalm 121. This Psalm is one of a group of Psalms known as Psalms of ascent. Psalms sung
creation story ends with the creation of Adam & Eve – they were the pinnacle; essentially heaven and earth were made for them!
It’s sad, at least in my eyes, that so many people can live as though there is no heaven, lulled into believing John Lennon’s lyrics “Imagine there’s no heaven”. Heaven was created by God for redeemed mankind. In all Scripture, Revelation provides us with the best window to heaven. In the days ahead, as you peer in; may your spirit be stirred, your mind inspired and your heart filled with joyful expectation at the prospect of the place prepared for those who have been saved by grace alone.

as pilgrims made their way joyfully to Jerusalem to worship God. As they approached Jerusalem, set high on an elevated plateau, they would raise their eyes and see the city of God, set on Mount Zion, and sing “I lift my eyes to the mountains, where does my help come from?” Others would sing in response, “My help comes from the Lord, Maker of heaven and earth”. I imagine the crowds, weary through the long journey and the final ascent, shouting with joy and expectation. Theirs was a real physical journey but it was also symbolic of their spiritual journey.
Did you note the response to the question, where does my help come from? “My help comes from the Maker of Heaven and Earth”. Not just the Maker of Earth but of Heaven and Earth! Did you note the order? - heaven first then earth! We find the same sequence in Genesis 1:1, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth”. In the Bible, heaven is present alongside earth, both bearing the same reality. The
