Friday February 6 - The sea of glass
In front of the throne there was what looked like a sea of glass, clear as crystal. Revelation 4:6
The most beautiful sea I ever saw was on holiday in Albania – the Ionian Sea. It was clear and turquoise. I could see my feet and even the small stones on the seabed beneath me. It was stunning!
I can only marvel, imagining what the sea of crystal in John’s vision might be like! The symbolism is absolute purity. Can you imagine how beautiful something this crystal clear would be? The loveliness of this crystal clear purity shows us what it will be like when everything is pure and clean and there is no more chaos at all. And when there is no chaos, there is absolute peace!
In a very scaled-down version, I sense this in my home; when the kids have been playing all day and have used every single toy, you can hardly see the carpet and I feel that I can barely think! But once everything is put away, tidy and organised again, I feel I can then sit down and catch five minutes’ peace! John’s description of the sea of glass gives us hope for how things will be when ALL chaos is put back into order.
Whatever chaos you are dealing with in your life, Jesus is coming to bring order and peace.
Lord Jesus, please bring your clarity and peace to my chaos. Amen.
Saturday February 7 - Worthy of it all
...the four living creatures... never stop saying... “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty...” Revelation 4:8
Four winged creatures covered in eyes with faces of a lion, an ox, a man and an eagle! What a sight! They are described in even more detail in Ezekiel chapter 1. These creatures are the guardians of the heavenly throne, and their other-worldly characteristics represent aspects of God’s divine qualities. Their eyes represent that God is all-seeing and all-knowing. Their wings show their ability to move in any direction, symbolising God’s omnipresence. But most importantly these creatures uphold Jesus’ throne and his worship, leading the elders in proclaiming God’s holiness! Whenever the living creatures worship, the 24 elders also worship!
Today, as we finish this week of reflecting on the incredible vision of heaven in Revelation 4, take some time to worship. You may like to use music inspired by the imagery in this chapter, for example the traditional hymn ‘Crown him with many crowns’ or the songs ‘Worthy of it all’ by David Brymer and ‘Revelation song’ by Kari Jobe.
The most important point that we can take from this whole chapter is that Jesus is HOLY and worthy to be worshipped for all time, by all living creatures, and with everything that we can give him!
Lord Jesus, you are worthy of ALL my praise, and I cast my crown before you in adoration. Amen.
