1 Listen, my sons, to a father’s instruction; pay attention and gain understanding. 2 I give you sound learning, so do not forsake my teaching. 3 For I too was a son to my father, still tender, and cherished by my mother. 4 Then he taught me, and he said to me, “Take hold of my words with all your heart; keep my commands, and you will live. 5 Get wisdom, get understanding words or turn away from them. 6 Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you; love her, and she will watch over you. 7 The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding. 8 Cherish her, and she will exalt you; embrace her, and she will honour you. She will give you a garland to grace your
Sunday March 16 - Generations of guidance
Listen, my sons, to a father’s instruction; pay attention and gain
understanding. Proverbs 4:1
In the forests of Argentina there are few roads, but paths have been created by the tread of feet over many generations. Follow them and you reach your destination, be it a ranch, a village, a clearing. You might come to a fork. Which way to go? Look for a marker tied to a bush to guide you.
As we seek wisdom – the teaching of God about the true way of life – our chapter this week urges us to look for and cherish guidance from past generations. We are called to listen to ‘a father’s instructions’ – a father who’d listened to his own father (v 3) – in order to understand the way that our Father God wants us to follow and the life he wishes us to live. Some people haven’t had wise earthly fathers. However, in his perfect and unfailing love our wise Father God is faithful and trustworthy to watch over and to guide us.
The prophet Jeremiah called on his people to “Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls” (Jeremiah 6:16). Those paths are found in the Bible, yet the people refused to listen to God’s wisdom and walk his ways. Let’s not be like them. God in his supreme Fatherly wisdom knows what’s best for us.
Father, guide me in right paths for your name’s sake. Amen.

21 Do not let them out of your sight, keep them within your heart; 22 for they are life to those who find them and health to one’s whole body. 23 Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. 24 Keep your mouth free of perversity; keep corrupt talk far from your lips. 25 Let your eyes look straight ahead; fix your gaze directly before you. 26Give careful thought to the paths for your feet and be steadfast in all your ways. 27 Do not turn to the right or the left; keep your foot from evil.
