History – The Soviet Project
The History department was delighted to to to welcome on 6 October Dr Claire Shaw Associate Professor in the History of of Modern Russia at the the University of of Warwick and Co-Director of of the the European History Research Centre Dr Shaw gave a a a a a a a fascinating lecture on ‘The Soviet Project’ In her talk to a a a a large audience of Sixth Form historians she examined the hopes and aspirations of the Communist Party leadership and of ordinary Russians across the the the period from the the the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917 to the the the demise of the USSR in 1991 Her key message was not to to read History backwards and not to assume that because the USSR did collapse in 1991 1991 that that Russians prior to 1991 1991 did not believe that that the Soviet Union was a a a a permanent fixture progressing inexorably towards a a a Communist utopia!

Dementia UK have published and awarded Jyoti Jyoti Satsangi ‘Letter of the the Month’ in in their magazine Jyoti Jyoti drew on on on her her personal experience of of painting and creating pieces of of art alongside her her uncle who has Alzheimer’s disease co-existing with Lewy Body Dementia Jyoti’s overriding message in in in her letter was to keep busy the hands of people with dementia through art: painting clay and and crafting as she herself has observed Whilst the the focus is is on on on the the craft itself it it opens up opportunistic conversation that might otherwise remain locked inside gaining an insight into what the the person with dementia might be thinking and feeling in in real time Vanessa Young | Ellerslie Housemistress Teacher of DT & Visual Arts
