 ABBERLEY ADVENTURES

  Academic Life
The Spring term has been jam-packed but it’s been more settled and children have been busy with their work and making good progress in all their subjects. Common Entrance is on the horizon for our Top Year, as are the end-of-year assessments for other year groups. Still, it is important to rest and recharge over the Easter holidays. A little Mathletics, quiet reading and watching interesting documentaries is never a bad idea as we move into the final stretch of this academic year.
Teachers have been very active in developing resources and the curriculum and undertaking training to add value to what they already do so well. Teachers go to great lengths to make sure that learning is inspiring and we have enjoyed a wide range of academic events, trips, workshops, visiting speakers and cross-curricular projects. World Book Day was a highlight of the term as was Shakespeare Day and my thanks go to Vicki Austen for making these events happen. Science Week was also a highlight and, again, thank you to Miss Cook for all she does to inspire and excite young minds.
The Modern Languages department is phenomenal in its energy and ability to bring learning to life! In a recent project, Year 6 planned and ran a French Café with children dressed as French waiters and waitresses, menus, lovely food and, of course, they spoke their best French throughout.
Year 5 children enjoyed a project where they researched, planned and then held a French Fashion Show. Pupils paraded the catwalk very professionally, displaying their favourite outfits as well as their lovely French accents. The finale was a little more extravagant than what you would witness after a Coco Chanel’s defilé but it perfectly reflected the joie de vivre in our Year 5 Classes! We look forward to welcoming a group of French children next term who will be joining Years 6, 7 and 8. Our pupils always enjoy making friends with our guests from France in the Summer term and we can’t wait to give them a warm Abberley welcome!
We have been busy planning ahead to the Extra-Curricular Week next term as well as planning residential trips and exams. We will kick-off with a talk from Tom Newman of Malvern College on study skills, which we hope becomes an annual event. School trips have been very much back on the agenda and Year 4 enjoyed an academic trip to Ludlow with Mr Raven, where they learnt about globalisation at the Islabikes factory. The bicycles are designed in Shropshire and manufactured in Vietnam and Taiwan and the Islabikes staff explained the advantages of working with people in other countries. The children then went to Ludlow to look at field sketches and settlement features. Year 7 enjoyed a poetry morning at Malvern where they were immersed in poetry workshops and activities. There will be more academic trips to stretch and develop our children next term with a Year 6 Science trip, Year 4, 6 and 7 Maths Challenges, and many others.
